Investing in the enterprising poor pays dividends immediately – improving nutrition, health, and education, and restoring confidence.
The impact grows as successful entrepreneurs build savings, create jobs for their neighbours, and earn enough income to change the course of their children’s future.
Microfinance creates an economic engine to help entire communities escape poverty. Growing businesses create new jobs for community members. Additional goods and services—such as vegetables or medicines—become available in the local market. More children attend school and eat nutritious meals, giving the next generation a head start toward self-sufficiency. Entrepreneurs gain a voice for change in their community, and train and mentor others to start microbusinesses.
Over time, the community is able to sustain the costs of self-sufficiency, such as teacher salaries, health care costs, and repairs to local water well. And as people are given effective tools to work their way out of poverty, the entire community starts to believe it can build a better future.
